Welcome to the Legal Aid NSW – Means Test Indicator

About the Means Test Indicator:

The Means Test Indicator is a guide to help you assess whether you may be financially eligible for legal aid in those matters where Legal Aid has a means test.

However, the results of the indicator do not guarantee that you will receive legal aid.

This is because the indicator can only work out your eligibility based on the numbers that you enter for the means test, which looks at your income and assets. The means test is only one of the tests for eligibility for legal aid. You will also need to pass other tests.

The information you enter is not saved, so it is completely confidential and anonymous.

Applying for legal aid:

As the indicator is a guide as to your eligibility under the means test only, you will still need to lodge a formal application for a grant of legal aid, so that your eligibility can be fully determined by the Legal Aid NSW.

If you are:

  • Under 18 and in trouble with the Police, you should call the Under 18's hotline on 1800 10 18 10 for free legal advice.

  • Self employed, a shareholder in a private limited company, a company director or a partner in a business partnership and think you are eligible for legal aid, you should get a private solicitor to lodge an online application or submit a written application form.

In certain situations, you may believe that other factors should be considered in granting legal aid.  See our policies for more information.  If you think this is the case, you should discuss your matter with:
